A UK Independence party Ukip councillor has claimed that Britain's recent storms and floods are "divine retribution for the government's decision to legalise gay marriage. David Silvester, who defected from the Tories in protest at David Cameron's support for same-sex unions, claimed he had warned the prime minister that the legislation would result in "disasters". The Henley-on-Thames councillor said that the country had been "beset by storms" since the passage of the new law on gay marriage because Cameron had acted "arrogantly against the Gospel".
In a letter to the Henley Standard he wrote: Blaming the prime minister for the bad weather, he added: Ukip said the views expressed by Silvester were "not the party's belief" but defended his right to state his opinions. A party spokeswoman said: It is quite evident that this is not the party's belief but the councillor's own and he is more than entitled to express independent thought despite whether or not other people may deem it standard or correct.
He really needs to consider his position.
The inclusion of Ukip in the original lineup of the Pride in London march set for 27 June had been controversial. Many in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender LGBT community spoke out against the involvement of the party, which has been linked to a string of allegedly homophobic controversies. Organisers said the decision was not politically motivated. A Pride spokesman said: It has not been made on a political basis. Instead they have decided to rescind the invitation under threats from and complaints by other members of the LGBT community.
It is a sad day for diversity and freedom when these people are prohibited from expressing themselves as part of the wider community. Be proud to be gay they say! But not if you vote UKIP. Who are the bigots here? But the party has not been able to shake off allegations of homophobia.
Alongside that decision came a commitment to give legal protection in the workplace to religious people who opposed same-sex marriage because of their beliefs, which would apply to cases such as the Northern Irish bakery found guilty of discrimination after declining an order for a cake bearing a pro-gay marriage slogan.
